Capturing the spirit of a person in a portrait is both an art and a collaboration. Each portrait is created with care and attention to the unique personality, expression, and story of the individual being painted. Whether commemorating a loved one, celebrating a milestone, or preserving a special moment in time, these portraits aim to reflect more than just appearance—they capture character, warmth, and presence.
Working from carefully selected reference photographs, Nuala focuses on subtle details such as light, posture, and expression to bring the subject to life on the canvas. Every commission is approached with sensitivity and dedication, ensuring that the finished piece feels personal, meaningful, and timeless. Commissions
When painting the portrait, I combine a traditional and contemporary style, blending the meticulous techniques of the Old Masters with the more expressive, conceptual ideas of today. This approach aims to capture the essence of a person while reflecting the complexity of modern identity.
Using these techniques can take time as the picture is painted in several stages. From the initial drawings and underpainting before moving onto the first and second painting stages. This is then followed by fine detail before applying a matt varnish.
I work with artist grade oils only and I can paint on either primed paper, canvas or wooden panels. Oil painting is the undisputed leader of painting techniques and, thanks to it, centuries later, we can still see many of the greatest paintings from the past.
Clients usually approach me to commission a portrait of themselves, members of their family, acquaintances or even their family pet.
I can work from existing photos and also give you guidance on taking photos of the subject. When possible, I can take photos of the client myself to work from.
Each commission is unique, and prices can range from as little as £250 for a 9" x 12" oil painting to £1500 for a 36" x 48" painting.
I offer a range of options to suit various budgets, ensuring that anyone wishing to capture the essence of their loved ones in a portrait, can find a suitable package.

About Nuala
'Nuala was selected to appear on Sky Portrait Artist of the Year'
Nuala is a Visual Artist specialising in Drawing and Painting. She aims to tell a story through painting, encouraging a dialogue between the art and viewer. Nuala has exhibited Nationally and Internationally, gaining widespread recognition and her works have been purchased for private collections.
Originally from Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland, Nuala completed her Fine Art degree at Belfast College of Art, after first studying Art for two years in Edinburgh.
She graduated in 2004 and was awarded the John Turner Bursary Award for Figurative Painter of the Year.
Nuala has received funding and won several awards including a New York residency from The NI arts council and funding from The Culture Company, while also being selected to appear on Sky Portrait artist of the year.
She is a member of Visual Arts Ireland, Artlink Inishowen and The Artist Collective 'Spilt Milk' Edinburgh.
